Bureau Veritas Hong Kong Offers Testing Services for Sunglasses and Sunglare Filters to European Standards July 2005 (05B-126)
Testing services for sunglasses and sunglare filters are now available through Bureau Veritas Hong Kong to the following harmonized European standard:
· EN 1836 – Personal Eye Protection – Sunglasses, Sunglare Filters for General Use and Filters for Direct Observation of the Sun
As sunglasses and sunglare filters are intended to protect the human eye against solar radiation/glare, these items are classified as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Complying with the Standard above will therefore provide grounds for declaring conformity to the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Directive, 89/686/EEC.
About the Standard
The Harmonized Standard listed above offers a method to evaluate general safety, optical properties, structural characteristics of sunglasses and sunglare filters, including the following aspects:
· Filter Requirements: Transmittance, Optical Power of Oculars, Scattered Light, Material and Surface Quality, Robustness, and Resistance to Radiation and Ignition
· Requirement for Complete Sunglasses: General Construction, Mechanical Requirement, Resistance to Ignition, and Material for the Manufacture of Complete Sunglasses
· Information Supplied by the Manufacturer: Identification of Manufacturer or Supplier, Filter Category Number, Number and Year of the Standard, etc.
Nickel Release Content
According to Directive 94/27/EC, the presence of nickel in certain objects coming into direct and prolonged contact with the skin may cause sensitization of humans to nickel that may lead to allergic reactions. For these reasons the use of nickel should be limited. In addition to EN 1836 for sunglasses, Bureau Veritas Hong Kong also offers testing to the following standards for nickel release from sunglass frames that come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin:
· ENV 14027 – Method for the Simulation of Wear Before the Detection of Nickel Release from Coated Metal and Combination Spectacle Frames
· EN 1811 – Reference Test Method for Release of Nickel from Products Intended to Come Into Direct and Prolonged Contact with the Skin
