Bureau Veritas Announces New Testing Capabilities for Baby Sleeping Bags and Infant Duvets in the UK
February 2007 (07B-106)
Based on client demand and the success of its services for adult duvets, Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services has expanded its testing capabilities to include testing of the thermal resistance (‘tog’) rating for baby sleeping bags and infant duvets.
The unit of ‘tog’ was developed by The Shirley Institute in Britain as an easy to follow scale instead of the SI unit of m2K/W, and it is now well recognised by consumers as representing the potential warmth of products such as duvets and sleeping bags. (1 tog is equal to 0.1 m2K/W. The American unit of thermal resistance, the clo, is equal to 1.55 togs.)
Our new tog testing rig is custom built to meet the requirements of the Baby Products Association (BPA) Codes of Practice and offers quicker and more reliable service than previously available. In the past, it has been difficult to obtain repeatable and reproducible results from tog testing rigs. Our new apparatus addresses this concern through calibration to tog reference standards and regular re-checks using internal ‘reference’ materials for ongoing consistency of results.
The BPA has developed the following Codes of Practice:
-
Code of Practice 1: Specification for Safety Requirements and test methods for quilts and duvets for domestic use by young children
-
Code of Practice 2: Specification for the minimum safety requirements for infant sleeping bags for domestic use
Maximum tog levels are specified: 4.0 tog for sleeping bags and 4.5 tog for duvets to avoid the danger of baby over-heating, which may be implicated in cases of SIDS.
In addition to tog measurement, a full testing service to the Codes of Practice is available to include construction, labelling/marking, restricted substance testing, dimensions, washability/stability, fibre percolation etc. For more information about BPA, please visit: http://www.b-p-a.org/
