Canada Proposes to Amend the Cribs and Cradles Regulations and Requests Comments from Industry May 2007 (07B-120)
In May 2004, Health Canada embarked on an initiative to revise and update their Cribs and Cradles Regulations, as specified under the Hazardous Products Act. Due to the questions and concerns raised by industry and the time necessary to answer those concerns, the issue has remained static for the last three years. As Health Canada has now answered all concerns they are reissuing the proposed amendments and requesting comments.
Proposed Amendments Some of the proposed changes to the existing Regulations are:
The elimination of toeholds that could enable a child to climb out of a crib and fall to the floor with a risk of injury.
An update to the regulations, including amending Item 25 of Part II, Schedule I to the HPA, from "Standard Cribs, Portable Cribs and Cradles" to "Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets" thereby broadening the definition of a crib and including bassinets.
Including bassinets and requirements related to their construction, performance, and labeling.
Establishing a same side height requirement of 660mm for portable and standard cribs to eliminate the current difference in requirements.
Harmonization with the United States concerns for crib corner posts and cut-outs.
