U.S. Customs and Border Protection Launches C-TPAT Pilot Program
September 2007 (07B-153)

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has launched a pilot program to assess the role of third-party certification as part of the C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) Program. The pilot program is being carried out pursuant to the requirements of the SAFE Port Act.

CBP has selected 12 third-party certification companies and will invite 300 importers to participate in the pilot program. Participation is voluntary and will focus on auditing and certifying suppliers in China over the next year. BIVAC, a division of Bureau Veritas, has been designated as one of the 12 certification bodies to participate in the program.

Beyond the pilot program, participation in the C-TPAT program is available to all eligible companies on  a voluntary basis. In today’s post 9-11 environment, C-TPAT offers companies significant benefits including the ability to create a more secure supply chain while helping to maintain or increase speed-to-market as products cross the border. Additional information on the program is provided below. Please call us directly for details.

UNDERSTANDING C-TPAT

What is C-TPAT?
C-TPAT is a voluntary program launched by the U.S. after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The objective of the program is to prevent the risk of terrorists using imported product or method of shipment to the U.S. as a potential means of attack. To meet this objective, C-TPAT requires participating companies to have their overseas vendors and suppliers audited for a number of security components.
