Magnet Safety: France Issues Labeling Requirements
October 2007 (07B-158)

Following various accidents involving magnets in toys and pending new specifications under EN 71 standards, the European Commission has urged the Member States of the European Union to adopt national measures to help ensure safe toys on the internal market.

As a result, France recently published an advice in the Official Journal of the French Republic to manufacturers, importers and distributors that provides labeling recommendations for toys with accessible small magnets.

Summary of Labeling Requirements

Warning Statements on the Product
This advice, which was issued to manufacturers, importers and distributors, recommends providing as quickly as possible and preferably before 1 January 2008, the following warning for toys having accessible small magnets that can be ingested:

“Attention ! Risque de lésions digestives graves si des aimants sont avalés”
(Warning ! Risk of serious digestive injuries if magnets are swallowed)
Or,
a similar easily understandable statement may be used.

Signage at the Point-of-Sale
Additionally, the notice calls for signs to be displayed at the point-of-sale advising consumers on the risks presented by toys containing small accessible magnets that can be ingested. The signs should be displayed from 1 November 2007 at the latest.
