CCMI Qualifies Bureau Veritas Laboratory for Fiber Identification November 2007 (07B-164)
The Cashmere and Camel Manufacturers Institute (CCMI) approved the Taunton, Massachusetts laboratory of Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services as a qualified laboratory at its Executive Committee Meeting on October 4, 2007. The qualification came after the laboratory successfully completed a series of round robin testing (involving about 50 labs globally).
The laboratory joins a select list of other laboratories around the world that have been similarly qualified by CCMI. While the Taunton laboratory has provided fiber identification services since the inception of the company, the listing highlights and confirms the laboratory’s capabilities. In today’s market where the demand for laboratories experienced in fiber identification continues to grow, Bureau Veritas is pleased to be recognized as a CCMI qualified laboratory. |
Fiber Identification in Today’s Market The challenges of accurate fiber identification continue to increase. The time has long passed when the distinction between animal hair fibers was fairly clear cut in terms of the structure, placement of scales and fiber diameter. Cross breeding of animals and chemical/physical modification of fibers have complicated the process of proper identification of such fibers.
While methodologies such as SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and DNA (identification through genes) techniques are being researched, it will take some time for these techniques to be perfected and commercially viable for fiber identification. In the meantime, optical microscopy still remains the most widely used method for fiber identification. Though instrumentation improves the ability to view a fiber, the experience and knowledge of fiber microscopists are extremely important for achieving accurate results.
Independent laboratories, such as Bureau Veritas, that are experienced in fiber identification, play a significant role in deterring mislabeling and intentional cheating. Our services are utilized by manufacturers, retailers and regulatory bodies such as the CPSC and FTC, who enforce the rules in the marketplace. Working with a qualified and experienced laboratory is the best solution for retailers, vendors and manufacturers seeking to confirm the laws governing fiber content labeling of their products.
