EU Eco-design Regulations 2024/1781

Published 13th June 2024 establishing a framework for the setting of eco-design requirements for sustainable products.

The European Union has implemented new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations, aiming to improve waste management and promote the circular economy. The key updates include:

Expanded Product Coverage: The EPR now covers a broader range of products, including textiles, furniture, mattresses, and construction materials, in addition to existing categories like packaging, electronic waste, and batteries.
Increased Recycling Targets: The regulations set more ambitious recycling targets for various waste streams, with the goal of achieving an 80% recycling rate for packaging by 2030 and an 85% recycling rate for e-waste by 2025.
Enhanced Producer Responsibility: Producers are now required to cover the costs of waste collection, sorting, and recycling for the products they place on the market. This aims to incentivize the design of more sustainable products and promote the development of a circular economy.
Transparency and Reporting: Producers must report on the quantities of products placed on the market, as well as the waste management and recycling data, to ensure transparency and accountability.
Eco-design Requirements: The regulations introduce eco-design requirements, which will mandate the use of recycled content and the design of products with improved repairability, durability, and recyclability.

These updates are part of the European Union's efforts to transition towards a more sustainable and resource-efficient economy, reducing waste and promoting the reuse and recycling of materials and apply from July 2024 with a transition period of two years.
