Adding to the list of states with PFAS in product laws, Rhode Island signed a law banning intentionally added PFAS in a specific list of products. In addition, they have amended their food contact packaging law to postpose the effective date again.
Requirement Summary and Effective Dates:
Consumer PFAS Ban Act of 2024
- As of Jan 1, 2027, covered products are prohibited from having intentionally added PFAS
- Covered products are carpets or rugs; cookware; cosmetics; fabric treatments; juvenile products; menstrual products; ski wax; and textile articles including apparel, textile furnishings and footwear.
- As of Jan 1, 2029, artificial turf and outdoor apparel for severe wet conditions containing intentionally added PFAS are banned. Outdoor apparel for severe wet conditions is not banned if it is labeled as "Made with PFAS chemicals."
Amended to Toxic Packaging Reduction Act
- The amendment moves back the effective dates for:
- Processing aids, mold release agents and intermediaries to July 1, 2027
- Adding PFAS as a prohibited substance in food contact packaging to
January 1, 2025 (most recent date was July 31, 2024).
