What is Sedex SMETA?

The Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA) is a globally recognized social audit standard. It empowers businesses to assess their own operations and those of their suppliers to understand and improve working conditions throughout the supply chain.

SMETA audits assess working conditions against the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) base code and relevant local laws. It assess a company’s performance in four key areas critical to ethical sourcing:

Labor Practices: Evaluating working hours, wages, discrimination, and child labor practices to ensure fair and safe working conditions.
Health and Safety: Assessing workplace safety hazards, hygiene facilities, and emergency procedures to protect worker well-being.
Environment: Examining waste management, pollution control, and resource use to minimize environmental impact.
Business Ethics: Focusing on bribery and corruption, anti-competitive behavior, and responsible sourcing practices to uphold ethical business conduct.

The Sedex SMETA framework offers two different audit levels to cater to your specific needs:

SMETA 2 Pillar Audit:

The mandatory core of a SMETA audit, focusing on two critical areas:
